Visas & Customs Requirements

General | Marriage | STUDENTS | Employment

Students:

All non-Japanese students who intend to take classes for more than three months and who do not have a resident, diplomatic, dependent, or spousal visa must acquire a Japanese student visa through TUJ. TUJ will submit visa application documents to the Japanese Immigration Bureau on behalf of all admitted students. For students currently residing in Japan, the visa process differs. Please contact an admissions counselor for more information.

In addition to completing the Admission Application, please submit the following documents by the student visa application deadline. All supporting documents must be in English. Documents sent to TUJ will not be returned.
  1. Visa Application Form
  2. Non-refundable Visa Application Fee of ¥20,000
  3. Copy of Your Passport
Page with photo and personal information.
  4. Two identical passport photos (4 cm high x 3 cm wide)
Photos must show a clear, full front view of the student's face from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair against a white or off-white background. 2 inch x 2 inch photos can be submitted if they are official passport photos.
  5. Proof of Financial Viability
Student visa applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support one year of full-time study. To do this, applicants must prove access to Y3 million (or equivalent foreign currency). This can be done by submitting copies of any combination of the following documents: financial aid award letter, bank statements, investment or retirement account statements, available credit lines, loan approvals, and scholarship award letters. Parents, relatives, or acquaintances may submit documents on behalf of the applicant. All financial documents must be dated within 3 months of the student visa application deadline.

Residence Permits for Students

TUJ operates on a three-semester academic calendar. Visa-sponsored students must maintain full-time status (a minimum of 12 credits) in both the fall and spring semesters unless they petition for a leave of absence and exit Japan. Visa-sponsored students may take 9 credits during the summer semester. Students with strong academic records may petition to take only 3 credits during the summer semester. Visa-sponsored students may not remain in Japan during the summer if they are not enrolled at TUJ.

For their first semester, visa-sponsored students must stay in TUJ-designated housing. Potential housing options include dorms, apartments, or a limited number of home stays with local families. Students already living in Japan, married students, students intending to reside with family members, and students with other special circumstances may apply for a housing waiver.

Working Permission

Visa-sponsored students are permitted to work up to 28 hours per week. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and obtain approval from TUJ and the Japanese Immigration Bureau. The hourly limitation also applies to internships. Unauthorized working is strictly prohibited by the Immigration Bureau.

National Health Insurance

All residents of Japan, including students who acquire a visa through TUJ, MUST register for national health insurance even if you have an insurance plan in your own country. The cost of insurance is determined by the local government. The cost may vary depending on the person's earnings and the municipality in which they reside. At present, the base yearly premium for individual national health insurance is approximately ¥35,000. If you don't have any income in Japan during the prior year, you may be eligible for a 70% discount on the yearly premium. If you do have income in Japan, your premium will increase depending on your earnings.
